Jobs@MATH+

PhD Student Position  |  @ Technische Universität Berlin (TU)

Working field:

The position is part of the MATH+ project “Likelihood Geometry of Max-Linear Bayesian Networks”. This research project is part of the Application Area “Networks” and focuses on the mathematical and statistical analysis of graphical models whose variables can produce large observed values that spread through a network (such as risk propagation in credit markets and flooding in river networks), powered by concepts and tools from tropical geometry.

Requirements:

  • completed university degree (Diplom, Master or equivalent) in Mathematics or a closely related course of studies
  • basic knowledge in the field of tropical geometry is required
  • knowledge in the field of mathematical statistics is an advantage
  • programming experience is an advantage
  • good to very good knowledge of English
  • ability to work in a team

Further information on this position will be given by Prof. Dr. Carlos Enrique Améndola Cerón (amendola@math.tu-berlin.de).

Head of MATH+ Junior Research Group   |   @ Technische Universität Berlin (TU)

Working field:

We are looking for a candidate with extensive experience and independent research results in the field of “Optimization under Uncertainty”, for example, in the field of Robust Optimization, Data-driven Optimization, Online Algorithms, and Algorithmic Game Theory. The successful candidate will receive funds to hire a doctoral researcher (PhD candidate) to start their group.

Requirements:

    • Dissertation in Mathematics, Computer Science or related disciplines
    • Research experience in “Optimization under Uncertainty”, publications in top-tier journals, and conference proceedings
    • Excellent written and spoken English

Applicants should be interested in cooperations with other scientific disciplines as well as with industry and commercial enterprises. Moreover, they should be distinguished by an excellent doctorate and their own research results in this area and should have achieved initial international visibility.

PhD Student Position | @ Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS)

Working field:

We invite applications for a PhD student position in the Research Group “Nonsmooth Variational Problems and Operator Equations” (Head: Prof. Dr. M. Hintermüller) to be filled at the earliest possible date. The position is associated to the MATH+ Cluster of Excellence project AA4-13: “Equilibria for Distributed Multi-Modal Energy Systems under Uncertainty”.

The work tasks include:

  • Studying these systems in a game-theoretical context that couples the physical constraints on the network, written in the form of partial differential equations with uncertainties, with the strategic behavior of agents participating in the energy market subject to uncertainties.
  • Analyzing distributed stochastic models where agents do not share all information but need to find equilibrium strategies.
  • Developing and implementing novel distributed algorithms to find a market equilibrium computationally.

We are looking for

candidates with a master’s degree in mathematics or a closely related field with a strong background in optimization and partial differential equations. Prior knowledge in distributed (stochastic) optimization, algorithms for solving games and variational inequalities, functional analysis, or stochastic analysis is beneficial.

Please direct scientific queries to Dr. C. Geiersbach (Caroline.Geiersbach@wias-berlin.de).
