The European airspace is increasingly congested, leading to detours and delays due to closure of airspace sectors. We aim at investigating user equilibria and the system optimum in capacity-limited airspaces, and developing efficient optimization algorithms for collaborative free flight trajectory planning.
In particular, determining user equilibria requires the ability to handle inadmissible regions in space-time which will be resolved either by smoothing the respective cost functions or by considering a lifted 3D HJB problem with time coordinate being absorbed into state space. On the other hand, the system optimum needs mutual exclusion from congested airspace sectors which in principle can be handled by a joint HJB formulation.
