MATH+ member Kai Nagel, Professor of “Transportation System Planning and Traffic Telematics” at Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin), has recently been elected to acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering. This distinguished appointment and recognition are based on his scientific accomplishments and standing, symbolizing exceptional scientific excellence. Congratulations!

acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering serves as an effective platform for the science-based discussion of strategic technology issues. Experts from diverse backgrounds, including science, industry and civil society, develop evidence-based proposals that contribute to public and policy debates. Funded by the German Federal Government and the Länder, acatech is the voice of the technological sciences at home and abroad. At the General Assembly of acatech in October 2023, 39 new members, including Kai Nagel, were elected to the academy. Their expertise further enriches acatech’s scientific spectrum, spanning fields such as human-centered AI, biotechnology, biochemical engineering, digital construction, building chemistry, and quantum optics.

Kai Nagel, a Professor of Transport Systems Planning and Transport Telematics at TU Berlin, expressed his thoughts on his election to the academy, stating, “I am honored to have been elected a member of acatech. I hope, in particular, that my involvement will help clarify and improve how results from modeling inform political and societal decision-making.”

His research interests encompass large-scale traffic simulations, modeling and simulation of socio-economic systems, and large-scale computations. Kai Nagel serves as an editorial board member for the journal “Networks and Spatial Economics” and regularly reviews submissions for various scientific journals, conferences, research proposals, and scholarships. He is also a co-author of the simulation software MATSim. Since 2020, Nagel has been among the experts advising the German Federal and State Governments during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kai Nagel, who pursued his studies in physics and climate research, completed his doctoral studies in computer science at the Universität Köln, Germany, in 1994. He conducted research at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA, from 1995 to 1999 and from 1999 to 2004 at ETH Zurich at the Institute for Scientific Computing, Switzerland. He has been in his current position as appointed full professor at TU Berlin since 2004.

Within MATH+, Kai Nagel is actively involved in the following projects:

Among the 39 newly elected acatech members is also the President of Technische Universität Berlin, Geraldine Rauch.
