Berlin Mathematical School (BMS): Call for Applications to the PhD Program 2024
The Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) is the Graduate School of MATH+ and a joint endeavor of the mathematics departments at the universities in Berlin: Freie Universität (FU), Humboldt-Universität (HU) and Technische Universität (TU). BMS offers a doctoral program in Berlin’s rapidly evolving scientific landscape, providing an exciting range of opportunities for both mathematical research and graduate education.
We offer an excellent doctoral program, taught in English, within a broad and active research environment. This is complemented by mentoring programs, language courses, soft-skills seminars, funding for summer schools and conferences, a buddy program, and funding for students with children.
“Mathematics as a whole“ is a guiding principle of the BMS. Its focus encompasses fields traditionally classified as “pure“ or “applied“ mathematics, though we prefer not to make this distinction. Instead, research topics are grouped into eight areas, each covering a broad yet cohesive part of mathematics:
-
- Area 1: Geometry and topology
- Area 2: Algebraic geometry and number theory
- Area 3: Stochastics and mathematical finance
- Area 4: Discrete mathematics and optimization
- Area 5: Discrete geometry
- Area 6: Numerical mathematics
- Area 7: Applied analysis
- Area 8: Mathematics for AI
As a BMS student, you will join a diverse community of fellow graduate students from around 50 countries, with 30% being women.
We are now accepting applications for admission from talented students who are completing their Bachelor’s degree or higher.
