DFG Granted 3rd Funding Period for CRC 1114 and CRC/TRR 154 – Both led by MATH+ Members

The Collaborative Research Centre (CRS/SFB) 1114 “Scaling Cascades in Complex Systems” started in 2014 and is led by MATH+ members Frank Noé of Freie Universität Berlin and Marita Thomas of Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS). The German Research Foundation (DFG) will be funding this research project for the third funding phase with 9.5 million euros.

Project description: Complex processes involving cascades of scales are ubiquitous in natural science research. Such processes feature more than two characteristic scales, their smallest and largest scales are widely separated, and much of their scale range participates in the process interactions. Such processes are often too complex to be captured in computer simulations in all detail, they withstand comprehension based on analyses of their first-principles mathematical descriptions, or they are inaccessible to experiment or observation. Addressing problems of this type calls for research that synthesizes insights gained from analysis, scientific computing, experiments, and observations, thereby freely transgressing disciplinary boundaries. With mathematics at the helm but with interdisciplinary ambition, the project aims at “Methodological developments for the modeling and simulation of complex processes involving cascades of scales derived from prototypical challenges in the natural sciences”. By addressing concrete applied research questions taken primarily from the life- and geosciences, the CRC aims to move the state of knowledge in these application areas while, at the same time, developing generalizable methods of mathematical modeling and analysis for cascades-of-scales problems.

The leading university is Freie Universität Berlin with spokesperson and MATH+ member Prof. Dr. Frank Noé (FU Berlin). As of July 2022, Dr. Marita Thomas (WIAS) will take over as spokesperson. Other participating partner institutions are Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Universität Potsdam, The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – German Research Center for Geosciences, Zuse Institute Berlin and Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS).

The DFG Collaborative Research Center (SFB/TRR 154) „Mathematical Modeling, Simulation and Optimization Using the Example of Gas Network“ is also entering the third funding period with a funding amount of 8.9 million euros.

The subject and central question of the SFB/Transregio “Modeling, Simulation and Optimization using the Example of Gas Networks” is how energy transport networks can be controlled and expanded in such a way that a transformation to new energy sources succeeds.

One challenge, for example, is the drastically increasing variability of the availability and consumption of energy carriers such as natural gas and hydrogen in terms of volume, location, and timing. New mathematical modeling and optimization methods, which also incorporate uncertainty in the energy markets, should helpfully support the expansion and control of future transport networks with regard to supply security and cost-efficiency.

Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg is the lead university with spokesperson Prof. Dr. Alexander Martin. Humboldt Universität zu Berlin with Co-spokesperson and MATH+ member Prof. Dr. Caren Tischendorf, Technische Universität Berlin, and Technische Universität Darmstadt are the partner universities. Other participating partner institutions are Universität Duisburg-Essen and the Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS). Among all participating Berlin scientists of the project, most of them are MATH+ members. For more details on the project members, please visit the homepage of CRS/TRR 154.
