Opening Workshop

The workshop on “Chaos and Contingency. The Role of Probability in Dynamical Models” starts the enquiry of the Thematic Einstein Forum Scales of Temporality: Modeling Time and Predictability in the Literary and the Mathematical Science into open temporalities and possibilities and their role in literature, philosophy of science and mathematical modelling. With speakers from these disciplines, it will address fundamental questions around the temporal relations of contingency, chaos and probability, such as how do dynamical models interact with the unpredictable, and how can chaos be described, analysed or even tamed? How is the broad field of contingency as all that is “neither necessary nor impossible” to be conceived, and where does it relate to the two poles of modality? In what way does a general futura contingentia, as discussed by Aristotle or Ockham, interfere with scientific methods of prognostics and prediction, and how are those methods based on models of temporality?
